Why not paint landscapes of nature or explore abstract images or any number of other artistic avenues. The question had a somewhat condescending tone to it. He even hinted that he would be willing to represent me if only I would grow as an artist. Here is my answer.
Allegra Torres, aka The Chainmail Chick, loves cosplay and attending sci-fi and fantasy conventions. I met her at Gencon, in 2010. She was wearing a lovely costume created by Organic Armor. I approached her with the idea of creating a figurine of herself with that costume. Here is the results. Sculpted from Super Sculpey and cast in durable resin, I present the Warrior Princess Allegra. She stands 16 inches tall. You can purchase this figurine model fully painted, or as a resin model kit, or as a faux bronze statue. If you are friends with Allegra please make a note of that in your order.
I have always liked the Kzin warriors from Larry Niven's Universe. Here is my take on what they might look like. The sculpture was started at Capricon 31. He is almost ready to cast.
Larry Niven is one of my all time favorite writers. The Kzinti (singular Kzin) are a fictional, very warlike and bloodthirsty race of cat-like aliens in Larry Niven's Known Space series.
I am currently working on Wonder Woman. This is another piece for my portfolio. First I sculpt in polymer clay and get my basic shape. I sand the hardened polymer clay smooth then make a mold to cast in wax.
I have a new project, Captain America. 1/4th scale. This one is just for my portfolio. When I was kid I painted a life sized Captain America on my bedroom wall. My parents flipped when they saw what I had done.
Ok, I am still on cloud nine so those around me are going to get a bit sick of me pointing out that I won a Judge's Choice award at this years World Fantasy Convention. The convention gathers together best selling authors and editors with outstanding illustrators and artist for a fun networking weekend.

This summer I took a class in lost wax bronze casting at the Indianapolis Art Center. Class began on June 7 and convened every Thursday thereafter. Glenn Evans was the instructor. Since our class was attended only by Otto and myself, we got combined with the mold making class taught by Bernie Carreno. So we had the benefit of learning from two great instructors.
We did not get to enjoy as much of the con as we would have liked because we were also visiting family in the area but we did enjoy the Art Show and the Tesla Coil concert. Duckon Art Show awards a small little trophy for "Best in Show" and "Fan Favorite". These are based on popular vote and I won the "Fan Favorite" for my Dragon Head Trophy.
I have another website. The official David Lee Pancake Art Gallery and online store is located at www.angels-n-dragons.com.
This website, davidpancake.com, serves as my personal blog. You will find that I get a bit carefree here. You will see my latest experiments, find my tutorials, entertain a few philosophical thoughts and find a few things for sale here that are not on the official website. But if you want to show a friend my artwork in its best possible light take a look at angels-n-dragons.com. Check it out today! and Thanks!
Hello, do you have a special character, project or a pet that you would like to have immortalized in sculpture? I do take on the challenge of a limited number of artwork requests each year. Please use my contact form and tell me about your project. I will give you an estimate and we can proceed from there. I would love to work with you. Thank you for your interest in my art.
Every New Year's Eve we go through the same process of making New Year's resolutions. Always before I have made resolutions that were very hard to keep. Like "I will loose 50 lbs." or "I will break that one bad habit" and then you know what inevitably would happen, I would break the resolution.
I will be attending this years Marcon, a Science Fiction Convention and Art Show held annually in Columbus, Ohio. The theme of the convention is "Necropolis, Year of Horror". I am planning several sculptures for this theme. The first is my wolfman. I will be casting this sculpture in a limited edition run of 200. I hoping to have it ready for the convention in May. This sculpture started as an abstract. Unfortunately my crazy brain kept insisting on making it "real". So this is what you get.
Here is my very first attempt at paper mache sculpture.
Here is the beginning of the project:
